A vehicle with four people inside veered off a roadway west of Bamfield and struck a tree, killing one person and injuring three, according to RCMP.

The single-vehicle collision occurred near the Center Main Connector of Central South Main Forest Service Road near Frederick Lake just before 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 24, according to Port Alberni RCMP.

Others driving in the area saw the crash and assisted with first aid until first responders arrived. When they did, they determined a male passenger was deceased and a female passenger was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital with potentially serious injuries.

A child who age is unknown and the driver of the vehicle were transported to hospital to ensure their well-being. RCMP did not disclose their conditions.

“The matter is still under investigation, however alcohol is not believed to be a factor,” said Sgt. Peter Dionne of the Port Alberni RCMP Detachment.

“Road conditions, inclement weather and limited communication at this remote location posed challenges to the response to this collision.”

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Traffic Analyst team are also investigating the fatal crash.
