One person is dead following a single-vehicle crash in the Cowichan Valley.

According to a North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP media release issued Friday afternoon, the incident happened on Gibbons Road in North Cowichan, near the Cowichan District Hospital, just before 10 p.m. on Jan. 31.

Although hospital staff attended the scene, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger was taken to Cowichan District Hospital — where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries — the release notes.

Meanwhile, a dog that was in the vehicle at the time was reported missing but has since been reunited with its owner.

RCMP say the cause of the incident is still under investigation but that there is no indication at the moment that alcohol was a factor.

Speed has not been ruled out as a factor in the crash, RCMP noted.
