Mounties in Port Alberni are investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a moving van that killed a person on Highway 4 early Thursday.

RCMP were called to assist the local fire department after a moving van heading eastbound on the highway veered off the road to the south, striking a fence just west of the Chamber of Commerce.

A vehicle just behind the van stopped to assist and called 911.

Paramedics treated an occupant of the van in obvious medical distress who later died from their injuries, despite resuscitation attempts.

Another person in the moving van was uninjured and didn’t require medical help.

The crash shut down part of Highway 4 for initial investigation but it has since reopened.

Port Alberni RCMP as well as the BC Coroner’s Office are investigating the crash.

Anyone with information about the driving behaviour of the moving van, or about the occupants of the van, is asked to call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
