Oak Bay senior falls victim to $5,000 phone scam

Oak Bay police are reminding people to be vigilant after a senior fell victim to a phone scam last week.

The woman got a call on Thursday from someone claiming to be with Visa.

She was told there was a fraudulent purchase of $5,000 on her credit card at EBay, the caller asked her for her credit card number and the three digit security number on the back of the card.

The fraudster used that information to scam the senior out of $5,000.

The woman then got a call from an actual Visa representative alerting her to the purchase and telling her that they’d cancelled the card.

The scammer actually called back and tried to defraud her again soon after, but police say she hung up.
