RCMP say it’s fortunate no one was injured after a driver drove through Nanoose Bay’s 5K Foam Fest on Saturday, nearly hitting event-goers.

At 12:35 p.m., Oceanside RCMP were called to Foam Fest, a travelling obstacle course, for a report that a vehicle was being driven through the event at 1515 Island Hwy. E., a police spokesperson says.

“The vehicle was apparently driving through the crowd and had nearly struck several people,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark told CHEK News.

“Fortunately, no one was injured,” he said.

Officers found the driver and conducted a series of sobriety tests, which indicated they were “seemingly under the influence of drugs,” according to Clark.

He says they were issued a 24-hour driving prohibition. An investigation is underway, with no charges laid against the driver at this time.

Just after 1:45 p.m. Saturday, RCMP were called back to Foam Fest after a skydiver, with their parachute deployed, “apparently miscalculated the landing and came in with too much speed,” says Clark.

“They struck the ground awkwardly and suffered unknown injuries.”

Police say paramedics with BC Emergency Health Services transported the skydiver to hospital.
