The RCMP say a person who reported to be in the waters off Sooke on Tuesday night was able to make it safely back to shore after a large-scale search was launched to locate them.

Searchers were called to the waters off Sooke around 10 p.m. for a “search for a person reported to have gone in the water from ashore,” according to Lt. Michelle Scott with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria.

Scott says the JRCC sent out the Canadian Coast Guard lifeboat, the Cape Calvert, a Cormorant helicopter and activated the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue 37 Sooke team to help the Sooke RCMP locate the person.

RCMP spokesperson Alex Bérubé tells CHEK News that a search was launched to locate the person, but they were eventually able to exit the water by themselves and is now considered safe.

The matter is still under investigation, according to Bérubé.

Scott estimates that the search vessels were in the area for about two hours before they were stood down.
