A fire broke out at the Emterra recycling facility in Cumberland on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

A cloud of smoke wafted over Cumberland as a fire broke out at the Emterra recycling facility.

Fire Chief Mike Williamson says that at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, crews from the Cumberland Fire Department were called to the yard at 2982 Ulverston Ave.

A bin filled with cardboard was up in flames, according to Williamson.

He says the fire, which happened outside, was bordered by large concrete blocks so the adjacent building wasn’t damaged.

William says no injuries were reported, and that the cause of the fire is unknown.

He says firefighters arrived via one engine and one rescue truck and were on scene for about two hours. Video footage sent to CHEK News shows crews extinguishing the fire.

The Comox Valley Regional District took to Facebook around 11:40 a.m. saying residents of Royston, a community Emterra services, may experience a delay in curbside garbage and recycling pickup.

“They are managing an emergency situation and we do not have any more information at this time,” the district wrote.

“We appreciate your patience and we’ll post more information as it becomes available.”
