No charges being considered in Monday's fatal motorcycle crash on Prospect Lake Road

An investigation into a crash that killed a motorcyclist in Saanich on Monday finds the way the motorcycle was being driven and its mechanical condition were the likely causes.

A 51-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Prospect Lake Road near Munn Road on Monday around 5 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It would appear that the manner in which the motorcycle was being driven and the mechanical condition of that motorcycle are the principle contributing factors in the crash,” reads a press release from Saanich Police.

“It is unfortunate that another driver was involved. The actions of that driver do not factor into the cause.”

The other driver was not injured.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, but that no criminal charges are being considered.

The tragedy raised further concerns about traffic safety along Prospect Lake Road.

Neighbours say the biggest problem is speed — people are driving far too fast on the narrow, winding road.

They’re now calling on Saanich to reduce the speed limit to 30 or 40 kilometres an hour.

“What we’re going to do at this stage is send it to ICBC for a full road safety audit,”said  Saanich Mayor Fred Haynes.

“We will, of course, implement any and all of the recommendations.”
