With week one of the election campaign complete, a Leger poll conducted for The Canadian Press puts the Liberals and Conservatives in a virtual tie.

The Liberals are holding steady at 34 per cent support while the Tories have dipped two points to 33 per cent.

But when it comes to who would make the best prime minister, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is up two points to 27 per cent while Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has slipped one point to 22 per cent.

On Wednesday, Trudeau promised to boost incomes for seniors, widows and widowers during a campaign stop in Fredericton.

He says a re-elected Liberal government would increase old age security by an extra 10 per cent once a senior turns 75, and will boost the Canada Pension Plan survivor’s benefit by 25 per cent.

Scheer says a Conservative government would review all federal business subsidies and eliminate programs where the funds benefit shareholders, corporate executives, foreign companies, lobbyists or consultants.

While campaigning in Hamilton, Scheer also said the Conservatives would have never spent federal funds in ways the Liberals have, including $220 million to buy energy efficient gas turbines for the Canada LNG project in British Columbia, and the $4.5 billion purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh is promising an NDP government would extend full public dental coverage to households making less than $70,000 a year.

Speaking at a clinic that trains dental hygienists at a college in Sudbury, Ont., Singh says it would be a first step toward including dentistry in public health care for all Canadians.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May will be doing media interviews in Vancouver on Wednesday afternoon.

People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier is campaigning in New Brunswick.
