A brand new tourist attraction, the Malahat Skywalk, is currently being built on Vancouver Island and it has plans to open to the public by this coming July.

This new attraction is described as “the ultimate natural high” with views from the lookout at 250 metres above sea level, according to its website. Visitors on the lookout will be able to see 360-degree views of both the Canada and U.S. coastlines, the Finlayson Arm, Saanich Peninsula, Gulf Islands, and multiple mountain ranges.

It’s shaped like a spiral ramp, with an elevated boardwalk leading to its 10-storey spiral tower — the first of its kind in North America.

The experience will also include a 600m elevated, accessible walkway in order to access the tower and the viewing platform itself will have the option to get down via a 20-metre-long spiral slide.

The project is being built by A.Spire by Nature, a B.C.-based company specializing in creating accessible, self-guided, nature-based experiences, in partnership with the Malahat Nation, on whose land the structure is being built.

“Malahat SkyWalk will provide British Columbians with a new, world-class tourism experience to enjoy right in their own backyard,” said Malahat SkyWalk general manager Ken Bailey in a release on Thursday. “Local guests will have the opportunity to be the first to visit, giving us the chance to connect with our community. We want to be something British Columbians are proud of and bring their family and friends to experience.”

With the structure being built on the traditional territory of the Malahat Nation, organizers say that the First Nation’s culture and history will be incorporated into the experience and has become an integral part of the design process.

Once the SkyWalk opens to the public, organizers say it will be operating seven days a week, 365 days of the year.

The official opening date will be announced once July draws closer and there is further information on the COVID-19 landscape in B.C.

More information about the experience can be found online here.
