New year-round flushable toilets are being built at Elk and Beaver lakes.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) announced Thursday that it had started construction on new washrooms at the Filter Beds, Beaver Beach and Eagle Beach within Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park. There will be flush toilets and will be fully accessible. There will also be natural lighting through skylights and LED lighting.

During construction, which is expected to go until Dec. 31, 2019, portable toilets will be available at each of the three sites in the park.

The CRD said the $1.1 million project is being done to “meet service demands and minimize impact to the environment” from the nearly 1.6 million visitors to the park each year.
