Nanaimo RCMP arrested a 31-year-old man after he stabbed a woman during a robbery.

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating after a woman was stabbed in a home at approximately 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

The 28-year-old woman received serious, but non-life threatening injuries at a home on Glenayr Drive, and was taken to the Nanaimo hospital for treatment.

Police say the victim knew the attacker, and that he allegedly tried to rob her of some cash. The suspect then allegedly pulled out a knife when the victim resisted his orders and stabbed her.

The male suspect fled but police found him nearby and took him into custody without incident. Upon his arrest, police found several knives on his person.

Nanaimo resident 31-year-old Michael Hansen has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, Robbery and Uttering Death Threats.

Hansen was released from custody later that same day and is expected to make a court appearance on July 21s later this year in Nanaimo Provincial court.

While crime reports are seeming higher than normal the Nanaimo RCMP has also seen an increase in domestic abuse calls since the start of the pandemic.
