A Nanaimo teenager has been taken to hospital after being struck by a vehicle while walking through a crosswalk on Tuesday morning.

In a police report issued by the Nanaimo RCMP, it states that the incident took place just after 8 a.m. on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 3.

The 14-year-old was crossing the street at the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Seventh Street when the collision occurred.

Police say that the youth received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by BC Paramedics.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, the driver of the vehicle – who was in his 50s – remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The vehicle involved, a panelled van, has been seized for a mechanical inspection.

Investigators have been informed by witnesses, who were at the scene of the incident, that the driver was headed southbound along Bruce Ave. and appeared to not yield to the youth in the crosswalk.

Police also suggest that alcohol and drugs are not considered to be contributing factors.
