Nanaimo RCMP say they saw a significant reduction in impaired drivers of the 2018 holidays.

Nanaimo RCMP say they’re cautiously hopeful after seeing more people relying on designated drivers to get home safely this past holiday season.

From the middle of December onwards, only 11 drivers were stopped for impaired driving in Nanaimo. Of the hundreds of vehicles checked by police through December, only eight drivers were issued a 90-day roadside prohibition, with half of those issued the morning of New Years.

Nanaimo RCMP during the same time period in 2017, 12 roadside prohibitions were issued.

The overwhelming majority of drivers were very thankful and appreciative of the time and effort our officers were putting in to ensure they got home safely, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

“Officers also commented that for the first time they saw a significant increase in sober Designated Drivers (DD’s), who gave up their night to ferry partygoers to and from festivities.”

Police say if you suspect an impaired driver, to call 911 immediately with the vehicle description, plate number, and last known direction of travel.
