Nanaimo RCMP says a man left hospital on his way to buying a lottery ticket feeling lucky to survive a fall off a cliff early last Friday morning.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to help recover the male, who was found around 1 a.m. at the bottom of rock bluffs just west of the Nanaimo Parkway at fifth Street, after taking a 30-foot drop.

RCMP say the 35-year-old told officers he and a buddy had been drinking alcohol and decided to “take their bikes out for a rip.”

Police could not determine whether he lost control or took a wrong turn before free falling over the cliff’s edge.

The man was taken to hospital by ambulance and was later released.
