Although March was Distracted Driving Awareness Month, police say the message to put your phone away while behind the wheel is still being ignored.

Nanaimo RCMP said multiple initiatives were in place to address road safety including a partnership with volunteers to conduct “Cell Watch” operations.

Police also had targeted enforcement in high traffic areas in the city and 27 violation tickets were issued for distracted driving.

Most of the violations were for using electronic devices, but police say tickets were also handed out for driving while control was obstructed.

Multiple warning letters were sent to vehicle owners who were seen driving while on their cell phones.

The volunteers were used to remind drivers to put their electronics away while driving.

RCMP advise you to give them a call if you have any questions or concerns about what constitutes distracted driving.
