Several thousands of dollars of damage has been done to the public dock near the Brannen Lake boat launch due to errant fireworks, Nanaimo RCMP say.

Around 11:15 p.m. on May 25, Nanaimo fire crews responded to a report of the dock on fire.

Fire crews told police a witness said the fire appeared to be caused by a firework that had landed on the dock, destroying a portion of it.

Witnesses told police they saw bright lights in the sky believed to be fireworks, then 30 minutes later saw flames on the dock.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames.

“It would be difficult to imagine that whoever set the fireworks off did not realize what they had done. The person or people responsible need to do the right thing and step up, and take responsibility,” said Const. Gary O’Brien.

Anyone with information or who may have seen people setting off fireworks at Brannen Lake on May 25 is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-17469.
