Independent Investigations Office have submitted a report to B.C. Prosecution Service for possible charges against Nanaimo RCMP officer.

A member of the Nanaimo RCMP could potentially be facing charges.

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) announced Monday that “reasonable grounds exist to believe that an officer may have committed offences” during an arrest that took place in Nanaimo more than a year ago.

According to the IIO, a female suffered serious injuries during the course of her arrest and detention by the Nanaimo RCMP on Dec. 2, 2018. The incident has been classified by the IIO as “serious harm.”

A  report to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges has been filed by the IIO.

“In order to approve the charges, the BC Prosecution Service must be satisfied that there is a substantial likelihood of conviction based on the evidence gathered by the IIO, and that prosecution is required in the public interest,” the IIO said in a media release.

The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
