Police say the fire at Motion (Motion Specialties) in Nanaimo was started by shoving paper inside a number of wooden pallets and setting them ablaze.

The Nanaimo RCMP and City of Nanaimo fire inspectors are investigating an arson at local business Motion, previously known as Motion Specialities, at 2518 Bown Road.

The store normally provides the community with wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility aids for children and adults, but it has had to close because of the fire.

The building sustained extensive damage. Fire crews arrived on scene at approximately 12:20 am on Thursday, and were able to contain the blaze mainly to the outside loading dock with minimal damage to the interior.

Police confirm the incident as arson after crews determined someone started the fire by shoving paper inside a number of wooden pallets and setting them ablaze.

Investigators also noted the chain-link fence surrounding the loading dock had been cut allowing the suspect to access to the area. A backpack was also found at the scene containing paper and various debris, according to police.

Investigators are currently canvassing local businesses for any CCTV footage. If you have any information on this incident, you are asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
