Nanaimo RCMP says a city bench was deliberately set on fire Monday afternoon and was destroyed by the flames.

Nanaimo RCMP is trying to find who is responsible for setting a city park bench on fire that wound up destroyed.

Police say Nanaimo Fire and Rescue responded around 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon and extinguished the blaze in the rear parking lot of Sands Funeral Chapel on Newcastle Avenue.

“The bench had been in its original location for many years and afforded pedestrians the opportunity to sit back and take in the shoreline of Maffeo Sutton Park, watch seaplanes arrive in the harbour, or to simply gaze out at Newcastle and Protection Island,” Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release.

RCMP say there are currently no suspects or witnesses in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
