Nanaimo man dies in fatal ATV rollover crash on weekend

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating after learning about a fatal ATV rollover crash that occurred on a rural property in the area over the weekend.

According to police, officers received a notification at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 4 from BC Ambulance Service that there had been a fatal ATV incident involving a 38-year-old man from Nanaimo.

Police say they believe the rollover incident occurred sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on the “sprawling rural property.”

The property is located in the 1600-block of Nanaimo River Road.

BC Paramedics, along with the Advanced Life Support Unit, responded to the scene first, but say the man was dead upon their arrival.

Investigators say they spoke with two of the man’s friends who said they had not seen him for several hours.

After his long absence, the friends say they went looking for him on the property and eventually found him at around 5:30 a.m. next to his rolled-over ATV.

The friends told paramedics and police that they attempted emergency first aid and called 911, however, his injuries were critical.

BC Coroners Service responded and have initiated an investigation into the cause of death as well.

The family of the deceased has been notified.
