A 59-year-old man is dead following a motorcycle crash in the Harbour City.

The crash happened at the intersection of Jingle Pot Road and Ashlee Road at around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

“A passing motorist located the motorcyclist, called 911 and commenced emergency first aid,” Const. Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson with the Nanaimo RCMP, said in a press release.

Eventually, paramedics arrived on scene and transported the injured motorcyclist to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, where he died later that night.

Nanaimo RCMP say while there were no other vehicles involved and no one actually saw the crash, witnesses told them the motorcycle had been seen speeding and driving erratically prior to the incident.

It appeared the motorcyclist was proceeding westbound along Jingle Pot Road and was attempting to turn left onto Ashlee Road when he struck the curb and crashed,” added O’Brien.

The incident caused the intersection to be closed for several hours while an investigation was being conducted, police say.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating and the man’s next of kin have been notified.
