The B.C. government announced Tuesday that a 12-classroom expansion project is underway at Nanaimo’s Hammond Bay Elementary.

The project is expected to be completed in February 2022 and will increase Hammond Bay’s capacity by 295 students.

“Students and staff deserve to spend their days in positive, engaging and inspiring classrooms that give them the best chance to thrive at school,” said Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Education in a statement released Tuesday.

The project is estimated to cost slightly more than $15 million — with $14.6 million in funding coming from the province and $1.25 million coming from the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District.

“We’re building a new addition so Hammond Bay students have the best learning experience possible,” Sheila Malcolmson, MLA for Nanaimo, said in a statement. “It is a great example of the work our government is doing to address the needs of our growing student population in Nanaimo and to support students throughout B.C.”

Additionally, the province said it is spending $18.8 million for seismic upgrades at both Pleasant Valley and Cilaire elementary schools. Construction for those projects is set to begin in June and be completed by 2022.
