A Thursday night crash in Nanaimo has claimed the life of one man and sent another to hospital.

Police said the single-vehicle crash happened at around 9:30 p.m. on Boxwood Road near Bollinger Road.

A 38-year-old man, who was a passenger in the 2008 BMW involved in the collision, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency crews responded.

According to police, the vehicle was being driven by a 27-year-old man. He was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police believe speed and alcohol contributed to the collision, based on conversations with witnesses, observations of the driver and examination of the scene.

The family of the man who died has been notified, along with the BC Coroners Service and Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services. The investigation into the crash continues.
