Multinational naval exercise to take place near Vancouver Island

A multinational naval exercise will take place off the coast of Vancouver Island beginning Monday.

A multinational naval exercise will take place off the coast of Vancouver Island beginning Monday.

According to a press release issued by the Department of National Defence, a joint multinational naval exercise will take place off the coast of western Vancouver Island, as well as in the vicinity of Constance Bank and the southern Gulf Islands, beginning Nov. 30.

The exercise will last until Dec. 13 and will involve members from the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force, U.S. Navy aircraft andtU.S Coast Guard.

“Public and civilian watercraft are requested to remain outside of 100m radius from Navy divers and dive platform. Additional exercises will also take place approximately 70 nautical miles west of Tofino throughout the exercise,” the department said in a statement.

Ships, aircraft and divers will also be in the vicinity of Esquimalt Lagoon during this time, according to the department.

According to the release, the exercise is designed to “strengthen the communication and coordination” between participating forces and help Canadian sailors maintain the skills needed to work in such environments during international operations.

The Department of National Defence says COVID-19 safety measures are being taken to “mitigate the risk of COVID-19 to the naval team, both in sea-going and shore-based units.
