A campground on Vancouver Island that typically closes for the winter season will stay open this year.

The Strathcona Regional District (SRD) has announced that the Muchalat Campground — located about 16 kilometres north of Gold River — will remain open this winter on a trial basis.

The move is the result of an agreement was reached between the SRD, Ministry of Forests, Village of Gold River, and the Gold River Rod and Gun Club.

“The Muchalat Campground is popular during the hunting season, and it will be great to see it well-used and enjoyed respectfully this winter with this pilot project,” Brad Unger, chair of the Strathcona Regional District, said in a media release.

Additionally, the SRD says an Electoral Area A grant-in-aid of $1,000 along with a $1,000 grant from the Village of Gold River will be given to the Gold River Rod and Gun Club, who will maintain and provide caretaking services for the campground throughout the winter.

While the Muchalat Campground will be managed by the Gold River Rod and Gun Club during the winter season, it will be available to all members of the public.

“The campground is being managed over the off-season by the Rod and Gun Club, but it is open to the public for day use and short-term camping,” Aniko Nelson, senior manager of community services with the Strathcona Regional District told CHEK News in an e-mailed statement Sunday.
