RV sales show no sign of letting up in Victoria as winter season approaches
WatchRecent RV sales are proof many Islanders are still looking to try camping even with the winter season fast approaching. Hannah Lepine reports.

Now is usually the time of year sales start to slow down at RV centers, but in Victoria, not this year.

As the pandemic continues many are looking for ways to plan a vacation safely and are doing so by hitting the road with a brand new trailer.

“They want to do something, they want to get out there, so they are traveling and they’re going to do it in an RV,” says Silvia Thistle-Miller, the owner of Triangle RV Centre.

Silvia says a large portion of their customers are older couples looking for a small getaway space for two, or young families brand new to the camping game.

“They aren’t traveling to Disneyland or going places like that so they’re going to go camping and take their kids in a bunk-model trailer,” adds Miller.

Many once-RV-packed lots are nearly empty, and many companies are just trying to keep up with the demand.

“Everybody’s busy and we’re trying to stock as much inventory as possible but the truth is these things fly off the shelves as soon as we can get them,” says Toma Lekhno with Galaxy RV.

Sellers say the pandemic brought in a different crowd of clientele, and there is no sign of the sales spike slowing down.

“I can suggest that the initial impact in the early part of the winter, you know, we thought the RV business was going to take a major hit and quite frankly by spring time it just soared and it hasn’t stopped since,” says Andy Holden with Galaxy RV.

As RV sales continue to surge, campgrounds say they’re also feeling the demand as well.

“Most of the parks, if not maybe all of them are fully booked for the winter,” says Jasmine Retzer, Operations Coordinator with Salish Seaside RV Haven.

As the pandemic continues on and many look for new hobbies and ways to spend their time, camping on Vancouver Island is proving to still be more popular than ever.
