Mounties are asking drivers who may have dashcam video to come forward after a teenage pedestrian was struck and killed in Nanaimo over the weekend.

Police say the 15-year-old boy was fatally struck in a southbound lane of the Nanaimo Parkway near Aulds Road at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

In the moments prior to the crash, drivers who were passing through the area called 911 to report a person had been “running in and out of traffic” before they were struck by a vehicle, according to RCMP.

“The role of our investigators is to determine why he was on the road, why he was darting back and forth,” said Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

RCMP said that a woman in her early 20s came forward to police Sunday morning, saying she struck the deceasaed with her vehicle and that she did not remain at the scene of the collision.

“She contacted us Sunday morning. We did seize her vehicle, an older-model Nissan SUV, it’s going to undergo a forensic and mechanical inspection and the investigation is continuing,” said O’Brien.

The woman was released unconditionally and O’Brien said it was too early to say whether she would face charges in the incident.

Police say that the boy was wearing dark-coloured clothing and that it was raining at the time of the collision, causing poor visibility.

Southbound lanes of the parkway were closed to traffic for three hours following the incident as a coroner and traffic analysts assessed the scene.

Nanaimo RCMP says it is speaking with the victim’s family and continuing its investigation of the crash. Officers are asking anyone with dashcam video or who witnessed the crash to contact them at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2022-19019.
