Saanich Police say over a dozen 911 calls were made on Monday to report at least three motorcycles speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on Highway 17.

Around 7 p.m., witnesses said the motorcyclists were racing on the highway in Saanich then going into Central Saanich, North Saanich and Sidney.

Traffic officers attempted to stop the motorcyclists but the drivers did not pull over and continued at a high rate of speed.

“At this time, we are asking the public to check their dashcam footage to see if they captured the riders, who did multiple laps up and down the highway,” said Const. Markus Anastasiades. “One of our officers was able to obtain a speed reading on one motorcycle of 270 km/h, which is an incredibly dangerous speed that put all road users at a significant risk of injury that evening.”

Anastasiades says the section of the highway where the motorcyclists were observed at 270 km/h has a 80 km/h speed limit.

The motorcycles were described as red, blue, and black sports bikes with no licence plates visible.

ICBC and Road Safety BC are working with Saanich Police as part of this investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321, or report what they know anonymously through the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
