A motorcyclist died in a collision on Highway 14 west of Sooke, Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023.

A motorcyclist has died following a crash on Vancouver Island.

The Sooke RCMP responded to a collision involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck around 12:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, on Highway 14 (West Coast Road) at Jordan River.

Initial evidence shows the driver of the truck travelling westbound on the highway attempted to make a left turn into a campground, according to Mounties. That’s when the motorcyclist, who was travelling behind, tried to pass via the oncoming lane.

“As a result, the motorcycle collided with the pickup truck,” said RCMP in a release Tuesday, noting the motorcyclist, 56, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

RCMP did not say if the driver of the truck suffered injuries.

Following the collision, the highway was temporarily closed between Trailhead Drive and Jordan River Recsite. Around 1 p.m., DriveBC said the road was closed in both directions, and by 2:30 p.m. it said it was reopened to single-lane alternating traffic.

Photos sent to CHEK News show a helicopter, police and fire crews on scene.

RCMP say the BC Coroners Service is investigating, and criminality has been ruled out. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sooke RCMP at 250-642-5241.
