BC Transit is continuing to push the message and raise awareness of its new mandatory mask policy for riders.
In an effort to promote the wearing of face coverings on all BC Transit vehicles, the organization has announced that teams will be handing out masks around the Victoria Regional Transit System on September 8.
Masks will be handed out to customers at the below times and locations:
- Downtown: September 8, 7:45 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Langford Exchange: September 8, 7:45 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Uptown: September 8, 7:45 a.m. – 10 a.m.
BC Transit decided to implement a mandatory use of face coverings on all buses in the communities it services across the province, which came into effect on August 24.
Although face masks are being mandated, BC Transit says the policy is an educational step without enforcement.
According to a press release from the transit authority, the new policy has been received with a “very positive response” from riders across the province.
BC Transit says that as a result of the positive reception to the mask policy, it “is helping to improve safety and create a comfortable environment for everyone taking transit.”
The mandated face coverings policy was made in alignment with TransLink, based in Vancouver.
In a press release from TransLink issued earlier this week, the organization said that a whopping 92 per cent of passengers were now wearing masks on board transit vehicles.
“This is a very encouraging trend,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Desmond. “This level of compliance shows our approach is succeeding and we’ll keep working hard to ensure we can continue to build on these numbers. I’m pleased to see our customers are helping us make transit safer for the thousands of people who rely on the system every day.”
