A Montreal man has been convicted by a jury of intentionally setting fire to his rental property in Esquimalt in 2017.

Wei Li had been charged with arson just over two years ago after a suspicious blaze broke out at his duplex on Uganda Avenue.

The BC Supreme Court heard that Wei Li intentionally set the fire, threatening the safety of the tenant who had been renting the property from Li at the time.

In the four days before the fire, VicPD attended calls to the property three different times, and neighbours said that police were often called to the property.

The jury reached a guilty verdict after six hours of deliberations on Friday. A date for Li’s sentencing hearing is expected to be set on Wednesday.
