No one was seriously hurt after a fire destroyed a mobile home in Nanaimo Saturday evening.

At around 5:35 p.m., Nanaimo Fire Rescue was called to a fully engulfed mobile home in the 2300 block of Barclay Road, near Labieux Road.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief Brad Wood told CHEK the fire was stubborn and that there was a lot of stuff inside the mobile home, making it more challenging for firefighters.

“There was lots of personal content inside, so they had a bit of a time with it,” he explained. “They got it under control quickly, but to fully extinguish it, it took a bit of time.”

Eventually, a backhoe was used to tear the mobile home apart, improving firefighters’ access to the blaze.

“We ended up having to call a backhoe to pull it apart in order to get at some hot spots so that we could get it fully out,” said Wood.

Two occupants of the mobile home were outside when firefighters arrived on scene, according to Wood, who said one was taken to the hospital as a precaution for “a bit” of smoke inhalation.

“One person received a bit of smoke inhalation and was transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital just to monitor,” he said.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.

“They will be back on Monday, so right now the scene is just under security,” Wood said.
