Missing Duncan mother may have left on her own, says family

CHEK

Concern is mounting in the Cowichan Valley where a young mother vanished without a trace one week ago. RCMP have both investigators and officers on patrol looking for Susan Mitchell, but so far there have been no sightings. Skye Ryan reports.

By all accounts, Susan Mitchell loves her boys.

She serves on her school parent advisory council and her mom says her life revolved around those kids. So the question RCMP and her family are now asking is would she have walked away from them and her common law husband, without a trace.

“At this point anything is possible,” says Mitchell’s mother Gail Montgomery. She has no phone, no bank card, no credit card.”

The last day that Susan Mitchell was seen by anyone in her hometown of Duncan was Tuesday, Sept. 5. A day she would have been happily planning for months, the first day of school.

The devoted mom had bought new back-to-school clothes for her sons, took them for the first day, filled out the forms sent home that night and even arranged a sleepover for the coming weekend for her son. She then seemingly vanished overnight when they’d all gone to sleep.

“And it was the little guy, the 6-year-old that woke Dan [Mitchell’s husband] up in the morning and said where’s Mommy,” says Montgomery.

Seven days later, RCMP say there hasn’t been a single sighting of Mitchell.

“There’s an urgency to all missing person investigations but this one stands out specifically there’s two young children that are without a mom right now and a husband who just does not know where his wife is.

But new details reveal, it’s possible Susan Mitchell did walk just away.  RCMP and her family say this is out of character,  but four years ago while living in Burnaby, Susan left her family without notice for 36 hours. That possibility is what her family is now clinging to.

“Think about your kids Susan,” says Montgomery tearfully.

RCMP continue to investigate the disappearance as a missing person case and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
