Ming’s Chinese Restaurant in Victoria closed following VIHA violations

Ming’s Chinese Restaurant in Victoria fenced off

Fencing has been noticed surrounding a Victoria restaurant that was closed earlier this year after a Vancouver Island Health Authority inspection.

Multiple violations were found by VIHA at Ming’s Chinese Restaurant, the inspection report from Jan. 25 cites four, one being critical — for Improper cleaning, sanitizing of equipment and utensils, as the hot water tank was not functioning.

The report goes on to say that the operator agreed to close restaurant until hot water is available.

A sign outside the building says it’s closed for renovations.

The main line for the establishment has been disconnected, and no information on the closure or renovations can be found on their website.

Other violations in the report include:

  • Poor hygiene and activities of food handlers as no liquid soap or hand towels were at sinks
  • A Food safety plan/sanitation plan violation as the establishment did not provide thermometers for coolers and record temperatures daily
  • A Improper construction/maintenance of the establishment violation as the walk-in cooler had a cupboard on the floor, not allowing for proper cleaning, along with broken lights and unused items and food that needed to be removed from the kitchen and back room.

VIHA was gave Ming’s a high hazard rating, indicating significant problems related to food handling and/or sanitation procedures.

The rating also warns that the facility is approaching the maximum level of risk considered acceptable for its continued operation and VIHA could close it if conditions worsen or the operator fails to eliminate the hazards.

The restaurant’s website says they have been serving up traditional Chinese cuisine for over 60 years.
