Central Saanich police say a medical episode caused a 60-year-old driver to crash into a Dodge pickup truck on Highway 17 Tuesday night.

Officials say at around 6:45 p.m., a grey Ford pickup truck going southbound on the Patricia Bay Highway collided with a black Dodge pickup truck. The Dodge truck was in the northbound left turn lane for Keating Cross Road.

According to police, the 60-year-old male driver of the Ford pickup truck suffered a medical episode that caused him to veer into the path of the Dodge pickup truck.

Police said the 41-year-old driver of the Dodge pickup truck was allegedly impaired by alcohol. He was given a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and a mandatory 30-day vehicle impound.

Both drivers were transported to the hospital by ambulance. They both have non-life-threatening injuries.

Cpl. Dan Cottingham, community engagement officer with the Central Saanich Police Service, says they are not able to release any medical information about the driver who had a medical episode. He also says that driver will likely be responsible for the crash.
