The same day that the Coastal Celebration returned to service, its sister ship, the Coastal Renaissance is experiencing a mechancial difficulty that is leading to cancellations.

At least two sailings are cancelled, and two others are at risk of cancellation.

The 3:15 p.m. leaving Tsawwassen and the 5:45 p.m. leaving Duke Point have been cancelled, the company announced at 4:18 p.m.

At risk of cancellation are the 8:15 p.m. leaving Tsawwassen and the 10:45 p.m. leaving Duke Point.

“Repairs to the vessel are currently underway, and pending successful sea trials, the vessel is expected to resume service with the 8:15 pm departure from Tsawwassen (Vancouver),” Karen Johnston, executive director of communications with BC Ferries said in a statement to CHEK News.

“Customers travelling without a reservation may want to consider walking on as a foot passenger or making alternate travel arrangements for tomorrow.”

In a notice, BC Ferries says the issue is with the main ship’s engine. Johnston says the issue is with the gear pump box, which is different than what resulted in the Coastal Celebration being pulled from service for over one week.

This comes the day the Coastal Celebration returned to service after being out of service since July 19.

The vessel had issues with an ineffective blade seal, which was a failure of the seal material, not with the way it was installed.

All four blade seals on the Coastal Celebration had to be replaced.
