A bean-bag shotgun was used to take down an armed man who made threats toward staff at a downtown Victoria business Monday, according to police.

Officers were called to the 1200-block of Douglas Street, near Yates Street, just before 7:30 p.m. for a report of a man armed with a knife who was making threats.

Police found the man as he was attempting to leave the scene but he did not comply with their orders, they said, prompting them to use the less-lethal bean bag shotgun round to take him into custody.

The man was then arrested without incident, with police seizing a knife as they took him into custody. The man was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man was held under the Mental Health Act after he was held in hospital for evaluation. He faces charges of uttering threats and causing a disturbance.
