A 29-year-old man turned himself in after police located a stolen truck in Chemainus.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say in the early morning hours of Dec. 18 officers located a truck in Chemainus that had been reported stolen from a parking lot where the owner worked the day before.

The detachment says although officers searched for the vehicle throughout the day and evening hours on Dec. 17, it wasn’t until they received a tip from a resident in Chemainus about the truck at 1:30 a.m. on Dec. 18 that they were able to locate it.

“On-duty members attended and recovered the stolen truck thanks to this tip from the community. Though police set up containment using emergency vehicle equipment and had assistance from the Police Dog Service, the suspect was not initially located during a search in the surrounding area,” Const. Carlie McCann of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP said in a release.

Later in the day on Dec. 18, however, the suspect, Ronald Lorenz, 29, turned himself in to the police.

Lorenz is now facing charges of theft of a motor vehicle and being in possession of property obtained by crime, but more charges could be filed, RCMP said.

“Police are still investigating other alleged offences related to this incident with the help of the RCMP Forensic Identification Services. Further charges may be considered as the investigation progresses,” said McCann.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP detachment at 250-748-5522.
