One person was taken to hospital after becoming trapped under a collapsed retaining wall in Saanich.

The incident happened at a single-family home on Agnes Street, near Panama Flats at around 3:00 p.m. Monday.

Multiple members from the Saanich Fire Department, Saanich Police Department and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics attended the scene.

At the time of the incident, the home appeared to be undergoing some kind of construction work in the front yard. An excavator and a pile of bricks and dirt could be seen in front of the home in the area where the man was rescued.

Trevor Stubbings, assistant deputy chief with the Saanich Fire Department, told CHEK News airbags and the jaws of life were required to free the trapped man.

“They had to lift the retaining wall up using airbags and they used the jaws of life as well,” he said.

Stubbings said the man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The patient is in good condition,” he said.

How the wall collapsed isn’t entirely clear at this point but Stubbings said Saanich Police are investigating.
