The independent civilian agency responsible for oversight of law enforcement in British Columbia is investigating an incident involving the Saanich Police Department, a police service dog and a suspect who sustained a serious injury.

According to the Independent Investigations Office of BC, Saanich officers were attended the 3500-block of Richmond Road at around 6 p.m. on May 31 for reports of a disturbance involving a man at a residence.

Few other details were provided about the incident but the IIO says that officers first spoke with the man and then about two and a half hours later, took him into custody with help of a police dog.

IIO says the man sustained a serious dog bite injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.

As a result, the IIO is now investigating the matter and is asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them toll-free at 1-855-446-8477.
