RCMP say a man was seriously injured after falling from a hydro tower south of Nanaimo on Nov. 9, 2019.

Police say a man was seriously injured after he was shocked and fell from a BC Hydro tower south of Nanaimo on Saturday.

On Nov. 9, Ladysmith RCMP were called to assist BC Ambulance near Riverbend Road after a man fell from a hydro tower.

After investigating, police learned a 20-year-old man had climbed the tower, was shocked then fell approximately 70 feet (21 metres) to the ground, resulting in significant injuries.

The man was airlifted to a hospital and is in stable condition. The incident led to some power failures in the Ladysmith area for several hours. Police said it is not known why the man climbed the tower and they are still investigating the incident, along with BC Hydro.

“This type of activity is both illegal and highly dangerous,” RCMP Division Media Relations Officer Cpl. Chris Manseau, said in a statement.

“With the height of the tower you risk severe injury if you fall, and you’re very close to the high power transmission lines and you risk being electrocuted, and then falling. It shouldn’t have to be said, but please don’t climb hydro towers”
