Family and police have confirmed a 46-year-old man who was injured in a downtown Courtenay assault has died.

The sister of the man said he died in Victoria General Hospital on Tuesday afternoon. She identified him as Sean Parker.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries earlier that day in the 350-block of 6th Street. Comox Valley RCMP said they were called to the area at approximately 1:25 p.m.

According to police, the man and a suspect were at the Courtenay library shortly before getting into an altercation. Police said the assault is not believed to have been a random incident and a person of interest has been identified.

Surveillance video from a nearby business captures the victim as he leaves the library then heads west on 6th Street. Moments later, the man he was seen arguing with allegedly assaulted him.

Police said the investigation into the assault is now a homicide investigation.

“Investigators have spoken with several witnesses; however, we believe there are more witnesses out there who have not yet come forward,” Sgt. Glen Breckon with the Comox Valley
RCMP Major Crime Unit said in a statement.

Police said anyone with information on the assault can call Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and refer to file 2019-17839. Anyone with video footage can email Comox Valley RCMP at [email protected].

Anyone who wishes to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or go to http://comoxvalleycrimestoppers.bc.ca/.
