A 56-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after a man was found severely assaulted in a Douglas Street apartment building and later died from his injuries in hospital in 2020.

Police were called to the building in the 3000-block of Douglas Street at around 2:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2020 and found the man suffering serious injuries after he was assaulted by a weapon.

He was transported to hospital and remained in critical care until he died from his injuries more than a week later.

Police said at the time they believed that the victim and the suspect were known to each other and the assault was an isolated incident.

George Thurrott, 56, was arrested Friday, April 8 in Mississauga, Ont. by detectives with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, Toronto Police and Peel Regional Police, VicPD said in a news release. He has been charged with second-degree murder and was transported back to Victoria where he made his first court appearance Monday.

Thurrott will remain in custody pending his next court appearance.
