Man charged with arson, uttering threats in fire that destroyed mobile home near View Royal

A 49-year-old man has been charged with arson with disregard for human life and uttering threats after a fire that destroyed a mobile home near View Royal.

The fire at the Park Meadows trailer park on Middle Road on the Songhees Reserve was reported just after 11 p.m. on Oct. 23. One mobile home was destroyed and another was seriously damaged. No one was injured but four people were displaced.

On Oct. 26, West Shore RCMP arrested Gary Lee Nelms in connection with the fire. He appeared in court on Oct. 29 and has been charged with uttering threats to burn, destroy or damage and arson with disregard to human life.

“West Shore RCMP Serious Crime Unit are leading this arson investigation. Fortunately, there was no loss of life resulting from this devastating fire. I can report a smoke alarm alerted the victim who was able to escape the fire through a window. We continue to seek additional information from witnesses about this crime and encourage anyone with information to come forward,” Cpl. Chris Dovell of the West Shore RCMP said in a statement.

Nelms remains in custody until a bail hearing at the Western Communities Courthouse on Nov. 1, 2018. Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
