A 23-year-old man has been charged in connection with a crash near Nanaimo that claimed the life of a retired Abbotsford police sergeant.

Conrad Nikolaus Wetten has been charged with one count of driving a motor vehicle without due care and attention. He is set to appear in Nanaimo court on Dec. 17.

Retired Sgt. Shinder Kirk died after a head-on collision involving two pickup trucks on Cedar Road near the Cedar Bridge on Dec. 22, 2018.  Kirk was 59 at the time.

Two other people in Kirk’s truck were airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two other passengers in the truck received minor injuries.

Wetten and the female passenger received minor injuries.

Following the crash, Nanaimo RCMP said investigators believed alcohol and speed were not contributing factors but weather and road conditions had not been ruled out.

Kirk was a former spokesperson for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. and the Vancouver-based Integrated Gang Task Force. He often spoke to the media about gang violence in the Lower Mainland.
