Retired Abbotsford police officer killed in Nanaimo head-on crash

Officials say one man has died, and two others from the same vehicle were airlifted to hospital following a crash on Cedar Road south of Nanaimo Saturday.

Abbotsford police confirmed that retired police sergeant Shinder Kirk was killed in the accident, he was a former police spokesperson for the department.

Kirk also was a spokesperson for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of B.C. and the Vancouver-based Integrated Gang Task Force.

He often spoke to the media about gang violence in the Lower Mainland.

Emergency crews responded to the crash around 1:49 p.m. and arrived to a head-on collision between two pickup trucks, the driver of the other vehicle was uninjured.

The accident was near the Cedar Bridge and is under investigation by the RCMP.

More details regarding the incident may be released Sunday.
