Victoria police say they’ve arrested a man accused of attacking a woman with a hammer in Irving Park, moments after damaging her tent with a baseball bat.

The incident happened around 9:45 a.m. Monday in the park, which is in the 200-block of Menzies Street in James Bay.

Officers received a report of a loud verbal altercation and while they were en route, they learned the argument had escalated and resulted in the violent attack.

They found the 48-year-old man near his own tent in Irving Park and took him into custody without incident.

The woman was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Victoria police say the man has a “lengthy” criminal history of more than 50 convictions and now faces charges of assault with a weapon, breach of probation and breach of a release order.

He was transported to police cells and held in custody pending a court date.

Police say they don’t believe the incident is related to intimate partner violence.
