A man was arrested after police say he randomly assaulted another man walking with his family in Victoria.

The incident, according to the Victoria Police Department, took place in the area of Fort Street and Stadacona Avenue just after 7 p.m. on April 2.

Victoria Police say the victim was walking with his wife and their infant child — who was in a stroller — when the suspect walked up from behind and began hitting the victim repeatedly in the head. The suspect also allegedly pushed the woman and stroller carrying the infant onto the road.

The suspect, a 30-year-old male, then ran from the scene but was later arrested in the area of Fort and St. Charles streets after witnesses pointed him out to officers.

Victoria Police say the man was taken into custody but later released and that an investigation into the incident remains ongoing. They also say the suspect is facing recommended charges of assault.
