A scooter rider was airlifted to a Victoria hospital after a collision near the Nanaimo Curling Centre on Oct. 17, 2019.

Nanaimo RCMP say a man riding a scooter was seriously injured Thursday after he collided with a vehicle that was attempting to brake at a marked crosswalk.

The crash occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Wall Street near the entrance to the Nanaimo Curling Centre. The man riding the scooter was airlifted to a Victoria hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said investigators on scene spoke with witnesses and the driver of the vehicle involved. According to police, based on a preliminary assessment, it appears the man riding the scooter rear-ended a vehicle as that driver was yielding for a pedestrian crossing on a marked crosswalk on Wall Street.

Southbound traffic on Wall Street from Bradley Street is being directed into the Bown Park parking lot then back onto Wall Street. Northbound traffic onto Wall Street is being directed onto Bowen Road.

Police said the street is expected to be closed for some time while investigators and an RCMP Traffic Analyst examine the scene. The public is asked to avoid the area if possible.
